Lute Festival 2010 Performers
Duo Marchand

Duo Marchand takes its name from a family of court musicians that flourished in seventeenth-century France.  In recent seasons the Duo has performed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Cloisters, the Yale University Collection of Musical Instruments, the Yale Center for British Art, CityMusic in Columbus OH; Harkness Chapel at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland; the Great Falls VA Chamber Music Series; The Hudson NY Opera House, the Morris-Jumel Mansion, The Chapel of Our Lady Restoration in Cold Spring NY; Washington DC’s historic downtown Church of the Epiphany; and the Huguenot Historical Society in New Paltz NY.  The Duo was presented by the New York Public Library in connection with “The Splendor of the Word,” an exhibition of illuminated manuscripts; and by the New York Botanical Gardens, as a special feature of the exhibit “The New Renaissance Garden.”

Soprano and historical harper Marcia Young is a regular member of the Renaissance groups My Lord Chamberlain’s Consort and Duo Marchand (with lutenist Andy Rutherford) as well as the medieval trio Trefoil, which has toured widely since its founding in 2000.  Recent highlights included joint performances with the Renaissance band Piffaro, Parthenia, the Newberry and Folger Consorts, and recitals at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Ars Antiqua series in Chappaqua, New York, and the HotShops gallery space in Omaha.  Marcia has taught vocal and instrumental classes at the San Francisco Early Music Society’s Medieval and Renaissance Workshop.  Upcoming are concerts with lutenists Andy Rutherford and Christopher Morrongiello, and in March 2011, a return to the Folger Consort.  During the academic year, she serves as Director of Performance Studies at Stern College, Yeshiva University.

Andy Rutherford began studying the lute in connection with his interest in seventeenth-century art, especially the paintings of Caravaggio and Vermeer, which often feature the instrument.  A regular member of My Lord Chamberlain’s Consort and Duo Marchand (with soprano Marcia Young), Andy has also appeared at Tanglewood and Lincoln Center with the Mark Morris Dance Group, at the Connecticut Early Music Festival, the Moravian Archive in Bethlehem PA, and on the Temple of Dendur series at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  He performs regularly with such ensembles as Parthenia, the New York Consort of Viols, Musica Antiqua New York, New York’s Ensemble for Early Music, and the Big Apple Baroque Band.  Internationally recognized as a builder of lute-family instruments, Mr. Rutherford has taught and lectured on the history of lute design at the Lute Society of America Conference and Seminar.
